    • Property crime has been decreasing since 1998, but continues to be considerably higher in Vancouver than other Canadian cities including Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa.

  • Challenges Youth crime rate on the rise

    Youth crime rate on the rise

    • While the overall number of actual crimes is down, the youth violent crime rate rose 2% here from 2008 to 2009.

    Surge in hate crimes

    • Our hate crime rate nearly doubled from 2006 to 2008 to 6 incidents per 100,000 people, during a time when hate crimes declined in other major Canadian urban regions.
      Hate crimes based on sexual orientation were much more frequent in Vancouver and Toronto in 2008 – metro Vancouver had 34 such crimes and Toronto reported 43 while Ottawa, Montreal and Calgary were all in the single digits.

  • Progress Crime is going down

    Violent crime is down, property crime is down, less cars are being stolen, and we have more police officers.

    • Violence decreased 12% from 2006 to 2009, to 14 acts of violence for every 1,000 people, but we are still the most violent major Canadian city.
    • Gang-related shootings are down 69% in the City of Vancouver for the first half of this year, with only 4 shots fired.
